Art on Beer – Be honest, have you bought a beer just because the label caught your eye? Explore with us on Tuesday, June 4 at 7PM at Warehouse on Watts (923 N Watts St, Philadelphia) as we dive into why the artists and the breweries make the decisions they do.
From an entire redesign to an addition of a new flavor series or one-off, the third installment of the Art on Beer panel discussion will be moderated by JP Flexner most notably known for his design work for Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company of Croydon, PA. This year’s installment features: the illustrations of Brewery ARS of South Philadelphia; the combined styles of free hand and graphic design from Free Will Brewing Company of Perkasie, PA; our Canadian friends, Collective Arts Brewing, who fuse the craft of brewing with the inspired talents of emerging artists and musicians; and Stillwater Artisanal from Baltimore, MD whose goal is synthesizing art and beer.
* We will have some seating both tables and at the bar, as well as high tops. Food & beverages will be available for purchase during the event
Meet your artists:
Collective Arts: Heather Vaughn & Ryan Thibault
Ryan Thibault is the Creative Director by trade, photography and illustration hobbiest, and nature lover by compulsion. Before working at Collective Arts, Ryan was creative director and partner at a boutique design agency specializing beer, spirits and outdoor adventure sport media, marketing and branding. Ryan has worked with Collective Arts since its inception. He now splits his time between artist relations, design and creative direction. Ryan resides with his wife and daughter in Vermont’s Green Mountains, home of Collective Arts’ satellite design studio.
Heather Vaughn is an illustrator and Game Artist who has worked in a wide range of markets, such as Publishing, Independent Tabletop Games, Advertising and Animation. Heather is the recipient of awards and recognition from The Society of Illustrators West, American Illustration, 3×3 magazine, Communication Arts, The Plastic Club, and the Ted Carey Prize. She has worked with clients such as Renegade Games, Restoration Games, Hunter’s Entertainment, Silverclutch Games, Infectious Play, The American Cancer Society, Collective Arts Brewing, and Bravo TV Network. When not drawing, Heather enjoys spending time with her partner, their dogs, and an ever-growing collection of snakes and lizards.
Free Will Brewing: Andrew Radcliff
Andrew graduated from West Virginia University in 2015 with a degree in advertising and beer drinking. His interest in craft beer led to a server position at his hometown Free Will Brewing, before transitioning to a full-time role within the packaging department. After a year on the floor learning the ropes of beer. Andrew did a complete 180, taking a position as Taproom Manager, assisting in the operation of Free Will’s two retail locations. This past February, Andrew became the company’s Brand Manager – overseeing the marketing department, designing labels, and operating Free Will’s social media channels.
Stillwater Artisanal: Mike Van Hall
Mike Van Hall is an artist and designer known for creating provocative and engaging art in the world of food and drink. Sometimes going by the anonym “the committee on opprobriations”, Mike has challenged the traditions of beer branding through his work as Stillwater Artisanal’s creative director. His range of style and story-telling are also showcased on the labels of Aslin Beer Company and Casamara Club. Mike’s work merges a mischievous sensibility with abstract minimalism and social commentary, creating a body of work that is both visually striking and intelligent.
Mike has also employed his edgy aesthetic in creating brand identities for restaurants, distilleries and other ventures, helping to build commercial projects that leverage novel, art-forward concepts appealing to more than just business priorities or consumer trends.
